A huge hit at the Consumer Electronics Show 2009, companies such as Panasonic and LG are currently making big strides with 3DHD (three dimensional high definition) with screens of truly remarkable quality.

Sky Television are predicting their own 3D service could launch in 2010 and Panasonic are promising 1080p 3DHD televisions by then. It seems 3DTV is becoming more a reality now but of course, one will still need 3D glasses.

More 3D content is currently being produced with the likes of Toy Story 3D and you can be sure 3D movies will be high on christmas wish lists by 2011, if not before.

Of course, not everyone is a fan of 3D movies. Mark Mermode (popular UK film critic and he of Kermode and Mayo’s Film Reviews on the BBC) recently commented that this recent push is simply DRM (digital rights management) for cinema and an attempt to cut down on movie piracy. With 3D, you can’t camcorder it and even if you managed to steal a copy from somewhere, well, one would need rather advanced technology and an impressive TV set up to watch it at present. Plus, many cinemas charge their customers for the 3D glasses resulting in increased ticket costs.

However, 3DHD television is on the way and whilst it won’t be for everyone, we’re rather excited about its arrival to the market late 2010. Watch this space for the early models becoming available in the UK and be prepared for a hefty initial price tag £££!
