Apple confirmed recently that consumer reports of earbuds for the iPhone & iPods causing small electric shocks are indeed, quite possible!
Apple iPods are capable of building up static electricity in certain conditions, for example dry, windy locations tend to result in the earbuds charging up with static electricity. But that’s not the only cause. In fact, as Apple themselves say, “Taking your device in and out of your pocket can create a static charge,” and additionally “Jogging or exercising with your device can cause a static charge.”
So, should you ever put your iPod in your pocket, or listen to music at the gym (that covers most of us we suspect!), then be prepared for a little zap every now and then to keep things interesting.
Static electricity shocks are usually minor and infrequent, so we don’t suggest handing in your Apple gadgets for fear of your life!
You can read the official response form Apple on their support forum.
This condition is very similar to dragging your feet across a carpet and receiving a static shock by touching a door knob.
Apple go on to say that “Receiving a static shock from a pair of earbuds does not necessarily indicate an issue with the iPod, iPhone, or earbuds”.
Ah disclaimers, don’t you just love them.

What a shocking article! LOL. The only shocks I get from my ipod nano earphones is when I hear a good song from Robbie Williams cos he’s so bad these days. I suppose listening to the ipod in the shower is a bad idea then!?!!!
